Founded in 1946, the CIEP (Centre international d’études péda-gogiques) contributes to the development of international cooperation in education. In 2003, it signed with its parent ministry, the French Ministry of Education and Higher Education, an objective agreement that defined its mission. The CIEP is recognized in France as well as abroad for its training skills, expertise, certifications and reflection in the field of international cooperation. The CIEP is also an international seminar center that hosts and organizes seminars and conferences about current issues in education.

The DELF (Diplome d'Études en Langue Française) and the DALF (Diplome Approfondi de Langue Française) are offered in 900 exam centers throughout 154 countries. About 350 000 units are taken every year and 60 000 people are awarded a certificate. Since 2005, the DELF and the DALF certificates are harmonized with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages from the Council of Europe.

Basic User

DELF A1
Breakthrough. Can understand and use familiar expressions and very basic phrases. Can introduce himself/herself and others. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.

Preparation course: Beginners 2 / Beginners 3

DELF A2
Waystage. Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions. Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information. Can describe in simple terms the immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Independant user

DELF B1
Threshold. Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar. Can describe experiences and events, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

DELF B2
Vantage. Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue.

Proficient User

DALF C1
Effectiveness. Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

DALF C2
Mastery. Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
