General French courses |

General Courses are
comprehensive courses whereby
participants assimilate and
practice the French language in
a structured way, following a
textbook, and through the
practice of the four skills
(listening, speaking, reading
and writing).
These courses are run all year
offering students the
opportunity to progress at their
own pace from one level to the
next:
- 1 class a week over 16
weeks (levels 1, 2, 3, 4)
- 2 classes a week over 16
weeks (levels A and B)
[during our short terms: 2
classes a week over 8 weeks]
Levels There are 16
levels, 4 'Beginner', 4
'Intermediate', 4 'Advanced' and
4 'Superior'
Assessments If you are
joining the Alliance for the 1st
time, it is necessary to sit an
assessment, you will find the
dates for them on our home page. |

BEGINNERS (A1,
A2)
The objective is to provide
students with necessary skills
and confidence to cope with
everyday situations. The focus
will be on oral communication so
as to answer participants' need
to improve their French for work
or to brush it up for travelling
purposes.
Participants will deal with
practical topics such as talking
about themselves, family, work,
weather, holidays, hobbies,
personal experiences… Relevant
tenses will also be introduced
(present, past and future).

The aim is to develop a
competence in relating more
personnal experiences and
opinions, working on :
- oral and written activities
relating to moods & wishes,
social activities & pastimes,
work, the media, environment,
art, social and cultural issues.
- a further study of grammar and
complex syntax structures.

participants to express
arguments, recount events and
develop an increasing awareness
of register and degrees of
formality, through the practice
of the following skills :

expression on contemporary
topical themes.

The aim is to enable
participants to
- understand a wide range of
demanding, longer texts, and
recognize implicit meaning;
- express themselves fluently
effectively for social, academic
and professional purposes;
- produce clear,
well-structured, detailed text
on complex subjects, showing
controlled use of organizational
patterns, connectors and
cohesive devices.
